IRS NOTICES: TAX DEBT

What is an LT11 letter?

Mark Steber

Chief Tax Information Officer

Published on: June 26, 2020

IRS notices are letters sent to inform taxpayers of important tax information. Each one is different, but we can explain what the LT11 is about.

Understanding your LT11 notice

This is a FINAL NOTICE and you must take immediate action. You owe the IRS money and they have the legal right to seize your assets to pay off your tax debt.

Type of Notice

Unpaid taxes

Why you received the LT11 notice

You received an LT11 notice because you have an unpaid balance on one of your tax accounts and the IRS has sent you reminders to pay the balance but received no response. The IRS is notifying you that it intends to seize your assets to cover your tax debt.

Likely next steps

As always, carefully read the notice, which will outline how much you owe.

You will need to immediately pay your tax balance. Once you pay in full, the IRS will stop adding penalties and interest. If you cannot afford to pay the full balance, you may be able to set up a payment plan to pay off your tax debt.

You can also contact a tax professional to learn more about your options.

LT11 Notice deadline

You have 30 days to pay off your tax debt or the IRS will either place a lien on your assets or directly seize them.

If you miss the deadline

If you do not pay your unpaid tax balance within 10 days, you will owe the IRS additional penalties and interest.
